US PGA Championship Venue - Description
The Atlanta Athletic Club was founded in 1898 and is the home club of golf legend Bobby Jones. The Atlanta Athletic Club is a private golf and country club in Johns Creek, Georgia, a suburb 23 miles north of Atlanta. All their facilities are located in one large complex that has been ranked in the top ten of country clubs in the United States for the last 3 years. Membership at the Atlanta Athletic Club is by invitation only and guests are allowed only when accompanied by members or when attending the PGA Championship.
The original home of the Atlanta Athletic Club was a 10-story building located on Carnegie Way, and in 1904 a golf course was built on Atlanta's East Lake property. In 1967 the Atlanta Athletic Club sold both properties and moved to a site in a then unincorporated area of Fulton County that would eventually become Johns Creek in 2006.
By hosting the 93rd PGA Championship, The Atlanta Athletic Club continues its tradition as the site of Major Golf Championships. The Atlanta Athletic Club is the only club in the South East to have hosted both men's and women's US Opens, as well as two previous PGA Championships. As you can guess, the club focuses on golf and has two golf courses, with both the Riverside Course and the Highlands Course recently having been redesigned by Rees Jones. The Club will host its third PGA Championship on the newly renovated Highlands course in August.
Highlands has hosted the following championships:
- 2002 US Junior Amateur - Champion Charlie Beljan
- 2001 PGA Championship - Champion David Toms
- 2000 Southern Amateur - Champion Ryan Hubble
- 1984 U.S. Mid-Amateur - Champion Michael Podolak
- 1982 Junior World Cup - Champion Spain (Olazabal, Gervas)
- 1981 PGA Championship - Champion Larry Nelson
- 1976 US Open - Champion Jerry Pate
The Highlands course is the site for the 93rd PGA Championship from 11th to the 14th August and this unique Par 72, 7,613 yard long course is certainly a bit different. Robert Trent Jones designed the original the back nine of the Highlands Course in 1964 and Joe Finger did the front nine, before the course was then redesigned for the upcoming 93rd PGA Championship by Rees Jones. Highlands is the only course in the world with the grassing combination of Diamond Zoysia Fairways, Champion Ultra-dwarf Bermuda greens and Tifton 10 rough. This combination should produce playing conditions that are sure to please the best players in the world for the 93rd US PGA Championship.
