History of the Race
The climax to the seven-race QIPCO British Champions Series Fillies and Mares category is over 1½ miles (2,400 metres) and is open to all fillies and mares aged three years and older (female thoroughbreds are known as fillies up to the age of four and mares from five onwards).
While the £250,000 race has taken over within the flat racing programme from Newmarket’s Group 2 Pride Stakes, it is to all intents and purposes a brand new contest. It now has Group 1 conditions and Group 1 prize money, giving it a completely different profile.
Whilst fillies and mares can contest all five category finales on QIPCO British Champions Day, having their own category gives them the chance to shine against their own sex without having to take on the best of their male counterparts. In the QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes, they will be looking to round off their season in the style of a true female champion.
