Australian Open Venue - Melbourne Park

Melbourne Park is a sports venue in the Melbourne Sports and Entertainment Precinct in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Since 1988, Melbourne Park has been the Australian Open Venue in tennis, which is played annually in January. The Australian Open venue is also the home of the Melbourne Tigers basketball team, and can be adapted to host ice skating, concerts, cycling as well as swimming and motorsport events. It is run by Melbourne & Olympic Parks, which also runs the adjacent Olympic Park Stadium.

Formerly known as Centre Court, Rod Laver Arena is a multi-purpose stadium seating 15,000 spectators, and has a retractable roof. The second largest court is Hisense Arena (temporarily known as the Multi-Purpose Venue during the 2006 Commonwealth Games), which was opened in 2000. It has a capacity of 10,500, and also has a retractable roof. There are also three show courts, with the former Show Court 1 now named the Margaret Court Arena. Margaret Court Arena seats 6000, while Show Court 2 and Show Court 3 each seat 3000 people.

Melbourne Park is next to the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Yarra Park, and there are several pedestrian bridges linking the two across the separating railway lines. The park is five minutes walk from Richmond and Jolimont railway stations, and five minutes from the city centre by tram (route 70) or ten minutes on foot.

Over 1 million people visit Melbourne Park every year, to play and learn to play tennis, to attend a convention, to catch their favourite international star in concert, or attend the netball or basketball. The Australian Open venue was completed in 1988 at a cost of $94 million and underwent significant expansion in 1995.

A change of Australian Open venue was proposed in 2008, with New South Wales authorities making clear their desire to bid for hosting rights to the tournament when Melbourne's contract expired in 2016. Since that proposal was made, a major redevelopment of Melbourne Park was announced, which is expected to run into the hundreds of millions of dollars. Melbourne Park will include upgraded and increased seating in major venues, a roof over Margaret Court Arena, improved player facilities, a new headquarters for Tennis Australia, and a partly covered "town square" area featuring large televisions showing current tennis play.A year later, these plans were largely approved, a move which guaranteed there will be no change of Australian Open venue until at least beyond 2036.
